Here are 10 of our Favorite Things

1. Little League Baseball starts. There is nothing cuter than seeing the T-Ball kids in their island business sponsored tee shirts and hats as they cautiously approach the ball.

2. The sunny days entice boat-owners to either work on their boats or actually take a short boat trip. Favorite places to visit in the Spring: Yellow Island with its beautiful wildflowers in bloom, and Jones Island with the friendly deer’s looking for a handout.

3. Farmer’s Market reopens at Brickworks with actual farm products and great home baking. Usually there is a small ensemble present and a very laid back atmosphere. The market starts at 10:00 on Saturdays and includes great starts for the garden.

4. The seed catalogues in the mail come and the packets, bulbs, and plants show up at local hardware stores. This leads to outdoor work and pleasure. And good eating. It’s so easy to pop some potato starts in the ground and stick a pot of cloves in the window.

5. The birds come back. At our house there is a pond and the Canada geese arrive and set up occupancy. The hummingbirds are hungry for any red flower or sugar from the feeder, and the goldfinches work upside down on the thistle seed sock.

6. The Orca whales are more likely to be offshore on the west side of San Juan Island. This year is especially exciting as there are baby whales swimming with three mothers.

7. The tourists start arriving off of the ferry. We might get tired of their questions by the time Fall rolls around, but it is energizing to see how excited they are to be on our island in the Spring and experience their enthusiasm.

8. Golf! We have a good public course with 9 holes.

9. Farm babies in the fields. It is fun to drive by and see the new lambs with their long tails, the white-faced little calves and the fillies and colts with their long legs.

10. Garage Sales! Few of us can resist a good garage sale, and these start up again when the weather is fine and the goods can be placed outside. It’s a good chance to visit and pick up something for a nice price.

We invite you to visit in the Spring and experience a few of our favorite things.
