Where’s the best view?”

I’ve lived on Orcas Island for about 18 years. Working as an Island Realtor I get asked a lot of questions from new clients looking to buy their island dream home. One of the most frequently asked questions is “I want to be able to see the water from my new home, where are the best views?”

Ironically, the best water views are often when your home is up away from the water! It seems everyone’s dream is to live on the water or close to the water. When living on the water you are often limited to what is directly in front of you. Unless you are fortunate enough to afford several waterfront acres, the closer you are to the water, the closer your neighbors are! This can limit your water view to almost nothing. Water front is not necessarily the best option if you wish to see exquisite water views. Some of my favorite island views are from the northern side of the island, overlooking the water with Mount Baker, B.C. skyscrapers and Canadian rockies in the background. From this northern vantage point you see glorious sunrises and, although you can’t view the sun setting, all the colors illuminate Mt. Baker! Another favorite location is Foster Point with its intimate views of surrounding islands & ferries. The Rosario area views have stellar westerly views. You see varied views of the resort, the sound and sunsets! “So, what do I tell people when they ask about the best views on the island? I would say that each spot on the island has a unique and beautiful view!”
