Hard to believe here we are already into December and people are gearing up for the Holidays.

This is a special time here on San Juan Island with all kinds of Holiday Festivities. Nearly every weekend there are craft fairs, tree lighting ceremonies, boat parades, and all around good cheer being spread throughout our island community. For the socially inclined there are many fun entertaining activities happening over the next couple of weeks. It is also a time of year to quiet down a bit from the usual hustle and bustle of spring, summer, and fall. It is dark from 4:30PM to 8:00AM.
Therefore many Islanders find themselves going inward spending time doing creative projects inside such as writing, reading, artwork, knitting, quilting, and cooking to name a few.

For me I still enjoy being outside in the cold and often wet conditions walking the trails. One of my favorites is the Mount Young trail at English Camp. It is fun to walk around English Camp and try to imagine what it must have been like to live in this beautiful area back in the mid 1800’s. The walk to the top of the hill is steep in parts but the view makes it well worth it. If you go in the mid afternoon you may be treated to a wonderful winter sunset which takes place about 4:15 this time of year. Don’t forget a flashlight or headlamp as it does get dark in a hurry and there are no trail or street lights around.

So, whatever your choice to engage in the merriment happening throughout the island, curling up by the fire with a good book, or bundling up and hitting the trail there is something for everyone on the Island this time of year.

Happy Holidays!
